Accessibility Statement

Last updated: April 2026

Our Commitment

Quemist is committed to making our chemistry reference and calculator tools usable by everyone, including people with disabilities. We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA as a measurable target for the site.

Accessibility Features

Quemist has been built with the following accessibility features:

  • Semantic HTML — pages use proper headings, lists, tables with scope attributes, and landmarks so screen readers can navigate content.
  • Keyboard navigation — all interactive elements (calculators, converters, navigation, theme toggle) are reachable and operable via keyboard.
  • Skip link — a "Skip to main content" link is the first focusable element on every page.
  • Chemical formulas — formulas rendered with subscripts include an aria-label that spells out the formula for screen readers (for example, "H 2 O" for H2O).
  • Calculator output — results use aria-live="polite" so screen readers announce updates as you type.
  • Reduced motion — decorative motion is minimal; essential animations respect the system's reduced-motion preference where applicable.
  • Color scheme — light and dark themes are available, switchable from the header. Interactive elements are distinguishable without relying on color alone.
  • Responsive layout — pages work at viewport widths from 320 px upward and support 200% zoom without loss of content or functionality.
  • Text alternatives — decorative icons are marked aria-hidden="true"; icon-only controls have descriptive aria-label text.

Known Limitations

Some areas of the site do not yet fully meet WCAG 2.1 AA. We are actively working on:

  • The interactive periodic table uses a dense 18-column grid that may require horizontal scrolling on small screens. We are exploring alternative layouts for assistive technology users.
  • Some calculator step-by-step displays rely on superscript/subscript formatting that may not always be spoken cleanly by older screen readers.
  • Third-party content (advertising, embedded Google Analytics) may not fully meet our accessibility standards. We apply reasonable effort to ensure ads do not block access to primary content.

We welcome feedback on any barriers not listed here.

Assistive Technology Compatibility

Quemist is designed to be compatible with recent versions of the following combinations:

  • NVDA or JAWS with Chrome, Edge, or Firefox on Windows
  • VoiceOver with Safari on macOS and iOS
  • TalkBack with Chrome on Android
  • Dragon NaturallySpeaking (speech recognition) with Chrome or Edge

If you use a different assistive technology and encounter problems, please let us know.

Reporting Accessibility Barriers

If you find a page, feature, or calculator that is difficult or impossible to use with your assistive technology, please report it. Include:

  • The URL of the page or tool
  • The browser and assistive technology you are using (with versions if possible)
  • A description of the barrier and what you expected to happen

Submit reports via the contact page. We aim to respond within 10 business days and to resolve confirmed barriers in a reasonable timeframe.

Enforcement and Complaints

If you are not satisfied with our response to an accessibility complaint, you may escalate to the relevant regulator in your jurisdiction — for example, the U.S. Department of Justice (Americans with Disabilities Act) or your national accessibility ombudsman under equivalent legislation (the Equality Act 2010 in the UK, the European Accessibility Act in the EU, etc.).

Ongoing Work

Accessibility is an ongoing effort rather than a one-time checklist. We review this statement and the site periodically to reflect current practice, and we welcome suggestions for improvement.
