The conversion is just decimal arithmetic — divide by a million — but it sets the scale for how much energy is actually involved. TNT carries about 4.184 MJ/kg by the original definition (1 kg TNT = 1000 thermochemical kcal), which is the reference behind every TNT-equivalent calculation in process-safety analysis. Bringing a J/g result up to MJ/kg lets a small bomb-calorimeter measurement land on the same axis as the bulk-energy values an industrial-scale calculation needs.
