The two scales carry different zeros, so converting the number without reconciling the reference silently adds or removes an atmosphere. A chamber sitting at 500 mbar absolute is 7.25 psia, which the same psi dial would show as roughly −7.4 psig.

Dialing a vacuum figure into a regulator

A 100 mbar absolute chamber converts to 1.45 psi, and 1.45 entered on a psig regulator delivers 1.45 psi above ambient — pressurising the vessel instead of evacuating it. The converted number is arithmetically correct and physically the opposite of what was wanted, because psi hardware is generally built to push while millibar hardware is generally built to pull.
