Where the factor comes from
There is a neater route to this number than scaling the kilogram definition, and it explains why the factor lands on an exact hundredth of a milligram. The avoirdupois pound divides into 7000 grains, and the grain was fixed in 1959 as exactly 64.79891 milligrams — one of the few customary units defined directly in a metric sub-multiple. Multiply through: 7000 × 64.79891 = 453 592.37 mg per pound, terminating precisely because 64.79891 stops at five decimal places and 7000 is an integer. The kilogram route agrees, as it must, since 0.45359237 kg × 10⁶ mg/kg returns the same figure — but it arrives without showing why the last digit falls where it does. Both are exact; neither was ever measured.
Precision and significant figures
Every digit of 453 592.37 is exact and almost none of them survive contact with the source measurement. Common mistakes
Losing a digit in six figures
453 592.37 is long enough that a dropped digit still reads as plausible: 45 359.237 is exactly ten times low and looks like a perfectly legitimate number. The space used for digit grouping is its own hazard, since spreadsheets and parsers often split '453 592.37' into two values. Paste the constant as 453592.37 with no separators and check the magnitude of the result.
Mass and mass rate compared directly
A cap written in pounds per year and a reading given in milligrams are different kinds of quantity, and converting the units does not make them comparable.
