Why this conversion matters in chemistry
REACH registration is where this becomes consequential. EU tonnage bands are written per legal entity per year — >1 t/y, >10 t/y, >100 t/y, >1000 t/y — and they trigger different documentation requirements at each threshold. The plant floor, meanwhile, logs in kg per batch. A 50 t/year band works out to roughly 137 kg/day at steady state, or 500 kg/batch on a 100-batch annual campaign. That kind of arithmetic is exactly what a dossier author needs when demonstrating tonnage-band consistency in an ECHA chemical safety report. The factor itself is just the kilo prefix.

Where the factor comes from
Unusually for a mass conversion, this one lands directly on an SI base unit rather than on a prefixed form of one. The tonne is defined as exactly 1000 kilograms, a definition that predates the SI and was carried into it as a non-SI unit accepted for use alongside it — chiefly because 'megagram' never took hold in commerce. The factor of 1000 is therefore a naming convention, exact and permanently so, and the whole derivation reads t × 10³ kg/t = kg. What is not conventional is the kilogram at the receiving end: since 2019 it has been fixed through an assigned value of the Planck constant and realized on a Kibble balance or by counting atoms in a silicon sphere. The tonne inherits that traceability without any adjustment of its own.
Precision and significant figures
A shift of three decimal places, exact, with no digits gained or lost: 12.4 t is 12 400 kg and remains three significant figures despite reading as five. The question worth asking is what the tonne figure was in the first place. Tonnage stated for a reporting band or an annual return is often a rounded or capped number rather than a measurement, and converting it produces a kilogram value that looks like a weighing and is not one. Where the kilogram figure is built the other way — summing per-batch masses toward an annual tonnage — round only the total, since rounding each batch across a hundred of them accumulates error the exact factor cannot undo.

Common mistakes
The symbol t is case-sensitive
Lowercase t is the tonne; capital T is the tesla. 'MT' turns up in trade documents meaning both metric ton and megatonne, quantities a factor of 10⁶ apart, and 'mt' is not a defined symbol at all. Write t, kt or Mt, and when reading a document that uses MT, resolve it against the magnitude of the quantity before converting anything.
Kilograms per tonne is a ratio
Impurity and additive specifications are frequently written as kilograms per tonne, which is simply parts per thousand — 1 kg/t is 1000 ppm, or 0.1 percent. Applying this page's factor of 1000 to such a figure treats a dimensionless ratio as a mass and inflates it by three decades. Convert the total mass first, then apply the ratio to it.
Annual tonnage spread over calendar days
Turning a tonnage into a daily kilogram rate needs the operating schedule, not the calendar. Fifty tonnes a year is 137 kg per day across 365 days but 152 kg per day across 330 operating days, and a campaign plant may compress the whole figure into a few weeks. The unit conversion is exact; the division that follows it is an assumption.
