About Aluminum

Aluminum is the metal that taught the world how much an electrochemical process can be worth. The Hall-Heroult cell — alumina dissolved in molten cryolite at around 960 degrees Celsius, electrolyzed with carbon anodes — collapsed the price of the metal by two orders of magnitude in the 1890s and turned a former curiosity into a structural commodity. The chemistry that makes it useful is mostly the oxide, not the metal: a 2-4 nm Al2O3 film grows on any fresh surface in milliseconds and self-heals through the same Cabrera-Mott mechanism whenever it gets scratched. Anodizing thickens that film deliberately into a porous matrix that takes dye and survives decades of weather. In a lab, aluminum is the cation that keeps confusing students because Al3+ is small enough and charged enough to be acidic in water — Al(H2O)6 3+ has a pKa around 5, which is why alum solutions sting. In the smelter, the same Al-O bond strength is why producing one tonne of primary aluminum still costs roughly 14 MWh, and why recycling at 5 percent of that energy is the only sane long-term play.

Fun Fact

The cap of the Washington Monument, placed in 1884, was a 100-ounce aluminum pyramid — at the time, that was the largest single piece of cast aluminum ever produced and worth more per ounce than silver.

Common Uses
